Free Soccer Training Drills: How To Switch The Ball

I will not force you to agree, but I would like to give some advices. During the free soccer training drills, best teams keep swapping the ball and watch for a chance to attack the goal due any negligence caused by the defense of the opposite team. These skills can easily be imparted to the new players, if, during the soccer coaching drills, the coaches would follow the tips we are going to mention in the following sections.

Match winning approach: divide and rule; keep the ball throwing from one side to the other looking for the space between the defenders to attack. Swapping the ball between the team players also helps reducing the stress.

The quick switch or the blind pass: Train one or two of your mid-fielders to dribble to the right, using the right foot, and then swing the ball to the left, sending almost a blind pass.Rapid Switching or the Blind Pass: Develop a skill in one or two mid-fielders to move the ball with right foot while kicking it to the left, showing almost a blind pass. Left-footed mid-fielder, can perform the trick by moving the ball using the left foot and throwing it back to the right side using left foot.

The defender of the opposite team will be surprised to see the pass and your team will catch them sleeping.

Soccer Drills

All players in the team will have to adjust to the expectation that a switch is always coming so tell your team to frequently switch the ball. This is most challenging technique during the soccer drills; that would enable the entire player to comprehensively participate in the soccer practice.

You need to setup six small goals on either side of the ground in order to carry on the drill. A point is scored by the team when the player runs through the goals placed in the middle when playing out from the back. To encourage switching, set two points for passing through the last goals.

During free soccer training drills, the goals should be made sufficiently wide to show that there is not much use just positioning a player between them to prevent a run or pass. Choose one player who runs from goal A to B. Staying between the goal would prevent attackers to score a goal.

Young defenders usually move away from their designated positions. They normally gather around the ball. Hence the defenders can be caught by surprise if the mid fielders learn to identify the opportunity areas and move the play on the other side of the field.

During following sessions of football drills, try to teach them to cover the entire width of the ground. Practicing this skills multiple  time will yield a good understanding of the threat area.

Player 1 will shoot the ball from the edge of penalty area to the player 2 on the other side. The precise control over the ball will enable player 2 to shoot the ball to player 3 standing near by the goal. Player 3 uses two touches, gets control of the ball with the first, and shoots with the second.

Someone like me would most likely realize the significance of adding free soccer training drills to ensure that all the team players are taught the methods to throw the ball in. During the youth soccer drills, around 70 percent of throw-ins are foul throws which makes the ball go in other team’s control.

For that matter and important step is to ensure that every player in your team is able to carry out throw-ins accurately and get control of the ball straight away. This would catch the defense unexpectedly and would highly increase the probability of keeping the possession of the ball and thereby letting the player go behind the defense and make a run for the goal.

All that is required to teach the players to get the ball back into play quickly is some simple actions and moves, performed correctly at the U-10 level and below.

When having free soccer training drills, certain soccer coaches have a tendency to depend on only a single player or some selected ones to make all the throw-ins. These players are tagged as designated throwers. So the most worn out player in the game is the designated thrower. He is supposed to run up and down the sideline and also across the ground, to make a simple throw in.

Here again I would reiterate the fact that each and every player in the team should be allowed to throw the ball in. Most commonly the ball goes off the boundary and a quick move forward makes it come back in control, the coaches however stop this activity. Then when that player complains, he/she is told that he/she is not a mid-fielder and the mid fielders are the only ones who are allowed to make the throws.

In coaching drills make sure that all the players are encouraged to reach the ball whenever possible. This quick move, apart from giving a chance to score, also has long term impressions which are far beyond the win-lose theory. The game usually lasts 50 to 60 minutes, with young players. Therefore it’s not a got idea to waste much of the time in bringing back into the play.

The soccer coaches who give importance to quick throws are important players in teaching strategic awareness towards their rivals. In carrying out football drills, teams that defend against a designated thrower generally have at least 20 or 30 seconds to get back behind the ball because usual defending against unexpected restarts would not work.

Coaches who sincerely want to develop their players for higher level of play must give adequate time to teach their players. After every beginner has learnt the way to perform correct throw-ins, the ball could be moved back to the field so that the kids can play.

Tips On Free Soccer Training Drills

Let me present some free soccer training drills using which you can control the ball effectively as well as shoot and pass it. In this article, you will know about 2 of the well-known soccer drills, Shoulder To Shoulder and Shark in the Middle.

Shoulder To Shoulder drill works both for offensive and defensive players. The objective of this drill is to teach the offensive player to master fast shooting under pressure and the defensive players to clean the ball.

This drill makes use of 3 players each drill group. The distance between A and B is about 10-15 yards.

B and the defensive player stand in a line shoulder to shoulder. B and the defensive player, who stand adjacent to each other, face away from the goal on the left side of the field. As soon as the coach whistles, A throws the ball in the rear of the remaining 2 players. B and the defensive player start to try and take control of the ball. B’s objective is to make a shot on goal while the defensive player’s aim is to turn with the ball and dribble it above the center line.

By involving players in coaching drills like Shoulder to Shoulder, players learn to win the ball despite being under immense pressure from the opposition.

Shark in the Middle is an interesting game that can be played any time during the practice and its duration can be worked out as per the need. It is one of many free soccer training drills that helps players achieve attentiveness and self-control in high-pressure situations.

Players assemble themselves in a large circle in the field. A player is chosen to be the Shark and stands in the center of the circle. There is only a single ball and it is given to the person who stands inside the circle.

When you blow the whistle, the player who has the ball passes it to the player just along the circle. Then, the second player passes the ball to a third player of his choice and so on.

Then you blow the whistle again and it means that the game should start. The aim of the game is that the shark should not be allowed to touch the ball. The player may select to pass the ball to anyone along the circle, be it a teammate right next to him or a teammate far away. The players make an effort to make as many passes as possible.

This goes on till the time the shark gets the ball.

When the ball is captured, the player that caused the ball to be intercepted becomes the new shark and the first shark finds a place along the circle.

Shark in the Middle finds a place among those football drills that require a sharp thinking and an idea of the experience of the shark.
