I can’t say if you’ll agree with me on this but in youth soccer drills, defense is the foundation on which the game depends. When the score in a game is 0-0, it denotes defense played flawlessly by both the sides.

Yet, in kids soccer drills, there are two characteristics of winning a game. One is when an excellent defense is displayed. And the second is by having a great offense that has the capacity to overcome the other team’s defense.

Your players will not be able to score if they cannot acquire the ball. Some coaches have a tendency to train their players in either defense or offense. But, a player must be given complete training in both playing defense when the ball is in other person’s custody and offense when it is with him or her.

Those players who let go of the ball in youth soccer practice should be the ones who chase the ball. This is necessary and most appropriate because the person who loses the ball is the one closest to the ball. So it’s imperative for him or her to put pressure on the player who has the ball now.

Youth Soccer Drills

This may also be seen as the player trying to get the ball back as soon as is possible. This will also provide enough time to other players in the team to return to their form and get into the defensive positions. This will restrict the opponent player’s movement in the field with the ball in his custody.

Players can be taught these skills by following the below mentioned techniques.

Immediate chase: When implemented correctly in youth soccer drills, it exerts a lot of pressure on the opponents from all sides. And it ultimately causes him or her to make a bad pass or lose the possession of the ball.

Fall back and delay: This requires the remaining team members to fall back, and challenge the opponent with the ball and delay him or her from getting into their team’s goal area.

Since the center of the field is the trickiest place to be in, ask your players to force the opposition player with the ball towards the touchline. This ultimately leads to the player not being able to make a pass and also move around in different directions.

Arc of Concentration: In terms of scoring, the Arc of Concentration is the riskiest area. Maximum number of goals is scored by players in the arc of concentration. So it’s very important to teach the players in youth soccer coaching to concentrate on moving the ball outside of this area.

This arc falls right ahead of the goal. It starts from one corner post of the goal right through the corner of the goal box and moving right up to the touchline. The chances of a goal being scored are high when the ball is in this area.

Ever wondered the effectiveness of using the head to readdress the ball while it is still in the air? Doing this skill in youth soccer drills is particularly safe when it is carried out with care and caution.

Before you begin with training the players in the skill of heading, deflate the ball a bit especially when they are doing it the first time. For this, let some air out of the ball and make it soft so that players find it easy to play with. Before I get down to the details of kids soccer drills on heading, let me share with you the basics of this skill that players need to be taught first.

When the ball is still in the air, the players should move along the ball for the reason that their body should directly in front of the ball when they face it. They should keep their eyes on the ball all the way in, and continue watching it as it strikes their forehead.

Your players must recognize the importance of continuously looking at the ball whether it coming to them to going away from them. It they don’t know which way the ball is going or coming from, they risk getting hurt. Teach them in youth soccer practice to use the top-front part of their forehead to strike the ball and not with the temples or top of the head.

Youth Soccer Drills

Almost all youth soccer drills emphasize the movement involved in properly heading the ball. Two of the drills have been explained below for a better understand of yours.

Sitting and Knees: This youth soccer coaching drill involves just 2 players and a ball. One player should sit on the ground with the legs spread out in the front. The second player should stand right in front of the second guy and pass the ball very low towards the other player. The strategy behind this is that the person who hits the ball has to come forward to do it because the ball id thrown short.

Repeat this activity with one player positioned with both knees on the ground. Here, the player will have to lunge forward to strike the ball. This drill has the effect of teaching the players to use their head in directing the ball.

Head out of Hands: To work with this drill, you need to have cones and a ball for each player. This drill requires the players to hold the ball with their hands and the throw it off by heading it. They should be taught to move their head to the ball and not move the ball to their head.

Use of cones can help in teaching them the skill of heading to a specific location. The players learn the techniques to head the ball in a direction using their head.

Youth Soccer Drills: Learn To Create Goal Scoring Opportunities

It is almost certain that young players enjoy playing soccer the most when they are able to score maximum goals. In designing the practice schedule, include such youth soccer drills that have many opportunities for them to score goals.

Many opportunities can be figured out in between the small sided games, full field scrimmages, and shooting drills. As far as possible, continue varying the practice of carrying out small sided games and full field scrimmages in kids soccer drills.

You can also include games that don’t involve a goalkeeper or restrict the movement of the goalkeeper within restraining lines. With a view to boost the chances of increasing the number of goals scored, add more goals or expand the ones that are already in use.

When young players improve in their shooting technique and the tactical knowledge about the shooting techniques, the chances of goal production are increased manifold. As is with passing skills, shooting techniques should also be taught to players at the beginner’s stage. Different forms of youth soccer drills can be designed with a view to perk up the shooting skills of players by including the following strings in them;

1. Stationery player shooting a static ball.

2.  A moving player shooting a still ball.

3. Moving ball being shot by a static player.

4. Moving ball being shot by a moving player.

In youth soccer coaching, players should be taught how to strike the ball properly while shooting. A lot of players have the tendency to take shots from the close range using the inside of their feet. This helps the players improve their shooting capabilities.

In circumstances where it is important to shoot with power, make the players use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. Their toes should be downwards and the ankles should be locked.

Elevation of the shoot is also affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Teach the players that they should keep their non-kicking foot a little ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot down. Try to keep the players focused on striking the ball. You can do this by eliminating all distractions like moving players and moving balls.

As the players keep progressing on their shooting skills, raise the bar so that their growth continues. As an example, when they show improvement with their shooting, make them work with the balls at increased speed and levels.

The kids soccer drills should teach the players everything that they should know about soccer. “Karaoke” drill makes the players achieve these skills. Practicing it makes the players run, handle the ball, and keep their balance along with building cardiac endurance.

Kids Soccer Drills: How To warm Up Correctly

Its unbelievable how underrated the importance of warming up in kids soccer drills is. It is something that being a coach, I would want to stress that warming up is obligatory and an important practice to lead the team towards a better start of the day. This issue is conveniently ignored as unimportant by the coaches in youth soccer drills. The consequences are then faced by the players when they suffer injuries in training.

This article will provide you an insight into warming up techniques for the team. Teach the kids to include all the body movements that allow all muscles in the body to get worked up. This is by far the best way to activate all the body parts. Rigorous sessions can result in stiffness and cramping of the muscles.

Tip 1: First and foremost the players should jog for 5-7 minutes. A few minutes of jogging and then moving on to sprinting is the best proposition. In this, the pulse rate should reach 120 beats per minute. However, slow progress is the key. Then make them swing their legs forward cross-body for about 10 times each. Players should then finish by energetically stretching their body greater than 20 yards.

Tip 2: Having said that, do remember that even this active stretching over 20 yards comes with some warm up drills of its own. Like the players can bounce backward and forward. Teach the players cross stepping as well. Players must also be trained on high-knee carioca. You can have these performed similar to sprinting.

Running towards the back also accounts a very efficient warm up drill in soccer drills for kids. Yet, the correct method of doing it is to rise up the heels to the butt. No doubt, it is a little difficult to practice it this way but there’s no other way of correctly doing it.

Tip 3: In order to buildup the force for the training session, kids soccer drills include numerous other exercises also. Have your players bounce with rings and swings. These give an added element to the skipping exercises. You can also make them cross-over skip. Quick Hip Swings, though it’s slightly complex, can also be used to warm up the body intensively as it’s a very valuable and tested means.

Then you can tell your players to do long shuffles with rotations in the middle. Have the players move back and forth using their legs. This activity is considered as extremely useful in body toning. Equally effective are high leg forwards and backwards.

Tip 4: Stretching must be appropriately and effectively performed. For the legs, stretch hinging works the best. Guarantee that all kids work out their hamstring, groin, calf muscles, and quadriceps without missing any of these. It is stretching that helps in increasing the range of muscles together with preventing any injury to the player.

In soccer drills for youth, it is also important to understand that kids should not overdo anything. They tend to get carried over by enthusiasm and injure themselves unnecessarily.
