I don’t know a thing about you, but I’ll bet that in youth soccer drills, the very basis of a game is its defense. In a match where the score remains at 0-0 for either side reflects a perfectly played defense.

But, in kids soccer drills, there are two phases to winning a game. One is by demonstrating an outstanding defense. Second is the fact that your team has a great offense competent of defeating the other team’s defense.

If your players are not able to get the ball, they’ll not be able to score. When it comes to training, some coaches teach either defense or offense to their players. But, a player is completely trained only when he is proficient in playing offense when the ball is with him or her and defense when it is with the other team’s players.

In youth soccer practice, players who let the ball go out of their possession should instantly go for the ball. The reason that this should be followed is that the player who has lost the possession is nearest to the ball. Therefore, it’s easy for this player to pressurize the one in the possession of the ball now.

Youth Soccer Drills

This is to say that he should attempt to get the ball back into his custody again. An added benefit is that the remaining team members would also get a chance to recover and take their defensive positions. This will restrict the opponent player’s movement in the field with the ball in his custody.

Players get to learn these skills by implementing the following techniques.

Immediate chase: When this is effectively done in youth soccer drills, it puts pressure on the opponent from all the sides. And eventually this has the effect of them losing the possession of the ball or executing a wrong pass.

Fall back and delay: To achieve this, it is a must that the remaining team members fall back, and challenge the opponent with the ball and delay him or her from getting into their team’s goal area.

Since the center of the field is the trickiest place to be in, ask your players to force the opposition player with the ball towards the touchline. This ultimately leads to the player not being able to make a pass and also move around in different directions.

Arc of Concentration: When we talk of scoring, the Arc of Concentration is the riskiest area. Most of the goals are scored by the players in the arc of concentration. So it’s critical to teach the players in youth soccer coaching to focus on taking the ball outside this area.

This arc is in the front of the goal. It sets out from one corner post of the goal all the way through the corner of the goal box and goes on to the touchline. With the ball inside this area, it is highly probable that a goal will be scored.

If you are like me, you probably believe that young players enjoy the game most when they are scoring goals. When planning your practice schedule, you can include youth soccer drills that offer numerous opportunities to players to score goals.

Use small sided games, full field scrimmages, and shooting drills to create opportunities for them. In kids soccer drills, keep on varying the procedures in small sided games and full field scrimmages with a view to encourage players to score more.

You also have the choice to add games that can be played without a goalkeeper or where a goalie’s movement can be restricted within given boundaries. The probability of players scoring goals is also increased by adding more goals or enlarging the ones that are already being used.

The chances of improved goal scoring can be experienced when the young players become experts in shooting techniques and its strategic knowledge. Like passing skills, players should be educated on shooting techniques early in their career. And then during the later stages of his development, these skills can be highlighted more.

Youth Soccer Drills

When it comes to youth soccer practice, the most useful method to develop player’s shooting skills is including drills in practice. Shooting drills play a major role in effectively scoring goals by way of developing shooting skills of the players. However, make sure that your player’s develop their shooting skills gradually.

Following series can be incorporated in youth soccer drills to make them suitable for developing player’s shooting drills;

1. Stationery player shooting a static ball.

2.  A static ball being shot by a moving player.

3. Moving ball being shot by a stationery player.

4. A moving player being shot by a moving player.

It should be an imperative part of youth soccer coaching to help the players hit the ball effectively while shooting. A lot of players have the tendency to take shots from the close range using the inside of their feet. This helps the players improve their shooting capabilities.

When in situations where more strength is needed, instruct the players to use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. Their toes should point downwards and the ankles must be locked.

How the non-kicking foot is placed determines the elevation of the shoot. Teach players to put their non-kicking foot slightly ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot low. Ensure that the players focus on striking the ball. You can do this by eliminating all distractions like moving players and moving balls.

As the players keep progressing on their shooting skills, raise the bar so that their growth continues. For example; when their shooting competence improves, serve balls at various levels and speed.

You should deflate the ball in case of teaching this skill to your players for the first time. Let some air out of the ball so that it becomes soft and easy to handle. When the ball is in air, teach the players to move along with it so that their body is directly in front of it when they face the ball. Teach the players to continue watching the ball all the way through and until that time when it strikes their forehead.

Sitting and Knees: This drill in youth soccer coaching requires 2 players and a ball. One player should sit on the ground with the legs spread out in the front. The idea is to throw the ball short so that the one heading it has to move forward to strike the ball.

This activity should be repeated with a player positioned with both knees on the ground. Now, the player will have to move forward to actually shoot the ball. This drill has the effect of teaching the players to use their head in directing the ball.

Head out of Hands: To work with this drill, you need to have cones and a ball for each player. It needs the players to hold the ball with their hands and then throw it out by heading it. They should learn the art of moving their head to the ball and vice-versa.

The cones can help the players learn heading to a particular location. The players learn proper handling techniques and accuracy for using the head to redirect the ball.

Kids Soccer Drills: 4 Tips To Warm-up

In kids soccer drills, it’s surprising that warm up before playing is considered unimportant. As a coach, I just cannot emphasize enough that warming up before sessions is not just mandatory but also a great way to kick start your training sessions. This issue is conveniently ignored as unimportant by the coaches in youth soccer drills. This has a direct affect on the health of players in form of injuries while practicing.

You will find some great tips on warming up your team before practice sessions. Teach the kids to include all the body movements that allow all muscles in the body to get worked up. This is the correct method of stirring up all the body parts. If the movements are intense, body could become stiff or develop cramps.

Tip 1: In this make the players go for a light 5 to 7 minute jog. It is advocated that players begin printing only after a light jogging. Check that the pulse rate in this reaches 120 beats per minute. But, slow improvement is better. Next, make the players sway their legs, front and back, which should take roughly 10 minutes each. Lastly, have them actively stretch their body over 20 yards.

Tip 2: Having said that, do remember that even this active stretching over 20 yards comes with some warm up drills of its own. For instance, the players should practice hopping forward and backward. You can also teach them cross stepping. Players must also be trained on high-knee carioca. These must be executed as if sprinting.

In soccer drills for kids, an extremely helpful warm up drill is backward running. But the best way to carry it out is to raise the heels up to the butt. It is a little hard to practice this but it is the only correct way of doing it.

Tip 3: In kids soccer drills, there are many other warming up exercises that increase the stamina to perform in the practice sessions. The players can be taught to hop with swings and loops. These give an added element to the skipping exercises. You can also make them cross-over skip. Although a little advanced, Quick Hip Swings is also a very effective and tested method that warms up the body a great deal.

Then you can tell your players to do long shuffles with rotations in the middle. Make them practice forward and backward leg swings. It’s a very efficient activity and helps in toning the body. In the same way, high leg forwards and backwards is also very effective.

Tip 4: Stretching must be appropriately and effectively performed. For the legs, stretch hinging works the best. Guarantee that all kids work out their hamstring, groin, calf muscles, and quadriceps without missing any of these. It is stretching that helps in increasing the range of muscles together with preventing any injury to the player.

It is also essential to note that in soccer drills for youth, kids abstain from overdoing anything. The kids get carried over in excitement and end up injuring themselves for no reason due to this.
