In performing youth soccer drills, nearly 70 per cent of throw-ins are foul throws and the other team gets the possession of the ball.

It is therefore imperative that every player in your team must be prepared to carry out a proper throw-in and get the ball into play almost instantly. A great way would be to have a sudden restart.

All that is required to teach the players to get the ball back into play quickly is some simple actions and moves, performed correctly at the U-10 level and below.

When having free soccer training drills, certain soccer coaches have a tendency to depend on only a single player or some selected ones to make all the throw-ins. Free Soccer Training Drills: 4 Ways To Switching The Ball

You can disagree, but I would like to give some useful tips. In practicing free soccer training drills, the best teams keeps on switching the ball, looking for space and exploring the opposition’s defense for a fault. It is the coach’s responsibility to train the kids on this skill and you can use the following soccer coaching drills for this.

Match winning tactic: keep the ball swinging between attackers from right to left; engaging the defenders in between. Look a good opportunity and attack the goal. Moving the ball from one to another player within the team helps reducing the stress.

The quick switch or the blind pass: Train one or two of your mid-fielders to dribble to the right, using the right foot, and then swing the ball to the left, sending almost a blind pass.Rapid Switching or the Blind Pass: Develop a skill in one or two mid-fielders to move the ball with right foot while kicking it to the left, showing almost a blind pass. You should teach the same technique to the left-footed mid-fielders, with the variation that they would dribble to the left side while swinging the ball back to the right side using left foot.

The defender on the other side will not be expecting the pass and your team can catch the opposing team sleeping.

Soccer Drills

This technique should frequently be used, and all of the players should become accustomed to it. Of all the soccer drills, your kids may find this drill rather difficult but it is it’s competitive nature that guarantees player’s total participation in soccer practice.

This drill requires six small goals on either side of the pitch. A point is scored by the team when the player runs through the goals placed in the middle when playing out from the back. They get two points for passing through the last goals as this encourages switching.

During free soccer training drills, the goals should be made sufficiently wide to show that there is not much use just positioning a player between them to prevent a run or pass. One player should be assigned to run through the point A to B. When the players are between the goals, attackers won’t be able to attack and goal.

Young defenders usually move away from their designated positions. They have tendency to move towards the ball. Therefore teach your mid-fielders to be aware of those areas and make a move, if they can transfer the play from one side to the other and make use of the defenders unawares.

During following sessions of football drills, try to teach them to cover the entire width of the ground. Teach them the skills and rehearse a few moves with them to let them know where the attacking threat might come from.

Now that you are armed with this information, incorporate these skills in your free soccer training drills, so your players are always ready and the opposition mid-fielders find it difficult to catch your defenders out. Let me show you how to control the ball in a manner so as to shoot or pass effectively and this skill can be perfected through the various free soccer training drills. In this article, Shoulder To Shoulder and Shark in the Middle are two such soccer drills that have been discussed in detail for you.

Shoulder To Shoulder is a drill that is intended for defensive as well as offensive players. The main goal of this exercise is to teach offensive player to practice fast shooting under pressure and let the defensive players practice clearing the ball.

This drill puts into play 3 players each drill group. The distance between A and B is about 10-15 yards.

B and the defensive player stand in a line shoulder to shoulder. B and the defensive player, standing next to each other, face away from the goal on the left side of the field. At the whistle of the coach, A throws the ball behind the other 2 players. B and the defensive player begin to make efforts to take control of the ball. B’s aim is to shoot on the goal while the defensive player’s objective is to turn with the ball and dribble it above the center line.

By involving players in coaching drills like Shoulder to Shoulder, players learn to win the ball despite being under immense pressure from the opposition.

Shark in the Middle is an interesting game that can be played any time during the practice and its duration can be worked out as per the need. This is one of those free soccer training drills that is aimed at developing attentiveness and self-control in players under high pressure situations.

Players assemble themselves in a large circle in the field. Then a player is made to act like a Shark and stand in the center of the circle. One ball is used here and it is given to a random player standing inside the circle.

When the whistle is blown, the player who has the ball passes it to the other one along the circle. Then the second player passes it to another that he likes and this goes on like this.

Then you blow the whistle for the second time which means that the game has started. The objective of the game is to make sure that shark does not get the ball. Player may pass the ball to anyone along the circle, be it a teammate right next to him or a teammate at a distance. The players make an effort to make as many passes as possible.

This goes on till the time the shark gets the ball.

When the ball is captured, the player that caused the ball to be intercepted becomes the new shark and the first shark finds a place along the circle.

Shark in the Middle is one of those football drills that call for quick thinking and the understanding of how sharks think.
